an interview from heart & soul magazine

10  I want to loc my 2-year-old son's hair.  Will this do more harm than good?

"I would advise her to take him to a professional loc stylist to get it started versus doing it herself," says Darlene Oliver, owner of Oliver Natural Hair Care Salon in Washington, D.C.

"At that age, the hair is very sensitive and she needs to know the proper shampoo and oils to use during and after the process."  Also keep in mind that the hair doesn't loc immediately.  It could take months because a often will pull them out.  Other things to watch: lint trapped inside locs, excessive dryness and hair loss due to strain on the scalp.

The veteran cosmetologist also believes in educating your little one.   "He has to be taught why his hair is like that, and why his hair looks different from that of other children," Oliver advises.  "Some parents do it because it's trendy, but it's also a cultural affirmation.  I wouldn't impose on a child something you don't believe in yourself."
